A career with the Public Defenders
In June 2020, DWL partnered with the NSW Public Defenders to facilitate an online panel discussion on career in criminal law and advocacy. Moderated by DWL Chairperson and Supreme Court Justice, The Honourable Justice Yehia SC, this was an exciting opportunity for Diverse Women to hear from esteemed professionals on why they chose the path of a public defender, their interest in social justice and passion for advocacy.
“I liked how they told us to be ‘fearless and courageous’. I appreciated the frank discussion regarding gendered perceptions and incidents of covert sexism from peers, police, and even clients. I also liked how they were frank about their workloads, and the dual importance of engaging meaningfully with clients and setting up appropriate client contact barriers. It was encouraging to hear the panelists’ personal anecdotes and that they progressed their career through hard work, not nepotism or privilege. ”
